Chapter 20

Amber took her time mulling about picking up the phone to her bosses. I couldn’t blame her for it. She’d gotten caught up with me and my team, which a lot of bad guys didn’t survive, and a lot of the good guys didn’t know how to deal with.

We sipped coffee in companionable silence for a while. Amber stepped out of the room after she finished hers, returned with a sleek-looking phone unit, and sat it down on the kitchen bench between us. I eyed the comm unit for a second, then met Amber’s eyes with a cheeky smile.

“It’s gonna be fine,” I assured her.

“That, or I get arrested for treason,” she muttered.

“If my dad’s on the line, then we’re good. We’ll sort it out together.”

Amber huffed out a breath, nodded, and touched the small metal panel. A pseudo-holographic interface flickered out above it. She tapped a series of keys, and the unmistakable sound of a call washed through the kitchen. Amber had left on the speakerphone, which I appreciated, and a tart female voice answered the phone after three rings.

“This is the Firm, how may I direct your call?”

“I’m looking for item #4693,” Amber replied, using a code that I assumed told the person she was talking to that she wasn’t compromised or under duress.

“Your purchase has been confirmed already,” the woman said. “Amber?”

“I’m here. I need to talk to Silver,” Amber said.

“You’re deep into this, girl. Why now?”

Amber glanced at me, and my grin widened as I gave her an encouraging thumbs-up.

“Circumstances have changed and I need to discuss his own assets in the field,” Amber replied carefully. “It wasn’t part of my original M.O., and I need some clarifications.”

A male voice cut into the call, old and thick with a Southern accent. “What?”

“I repeat—”

“Oh, I understand you perfectly fine,” the Texan replied. “Silver hasn’t deployed any assets of his own as he’s strictly here in an advisory role. Are you sure you’re not compromised?”

“It has to do with Unity, sir,” Amber pressed. “It’s urgent. I wouldn’t have called otherwise.”

“Amber, anything you have to say to him, you can say to me,” the Texan pushed back. “You’ve given us excellent results in the past, and I’m sure I can pass on the rest of your report to the others. Ellen, there’s no need to connect the others—”

“Sounds like someone wants to burn you,” I commented.

Amber winced at that.

“And who the fuck are you?” the Texan demanded.

“Silver’s asset,” I replied. “Put him on.”

“Ellen, close the call. We’re done here—”

A familiar deep tone entered the call, and I immediately recognized my dad’s baritone. He sounded alert and awake, which didn’t surprise me much, since I was pretty sure he ran entirely off the power of caffeine, nicotine, hatred for Pinnacle, and early-morning MMO raids.

“I’d strongly advise against that, Gavin,” Brandon said. “Amber’s not lying to you, and she’s certainly not compromised. And while I appreciate your zeal to keep the security around this tight, shouldn’t we all deliberate the
